COLLECTION OF SEMEN

 

FASTING BLOOD SUGAR

1. Come to the laboratory after 8hours of Fasting.

2. Refrain from eating, drinking or smoking before the blood sample is drawn. During the fast, water can be taken

 

* If FBS is requested with Lipid Profile, patient has to fast for 12 hours

 

Post Prandial Blood Sugar

 

1. The test will be done 2 hours after taking a meal.

2. Those who are taking medication for Diabetes should take the medicine along with the  food and come for sample collection

3. Meal should be taken within 15 minutes. The 2 hours should be counted from the time the meal was started

4. Come to the laboratory 5 minutes before completion of the 2 hours

5. During these 2 hours, refrain from eating, drinking (except water) or smoking

 

 

POST GLUCOSE BLOOD SUGAR –PGBS

 

  1. No time restriction is mandatory. Fasting condition is not necessary.
  2. Come to the Laboratory with 100g of glucose and a lemon.
  3. If 50g of Glucose is required for the patient, blood will be collected after 1 hour of the Glucose drink.
  4. If 75g of Glucose is required for the patient, blood will be collected after 2 hours of the Glucose drink.
  5. Refrain from, eating (including betel nuts), drinking and Smoking) after the Glucose load.
  6. Come to the laboratory 5 minutes before the completion of the required time.

 

GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST

6. Come to the laboratory after 08 hours of overnight fast with 100gram of Glucose, a lemon and urine sample.

7. You will be given glucose after the fasting blood sample is obtained

8. The test lasts for 3 hours and you are required to be present during this time as hourly urine and blood samples will be taken. It is advised to empty the bladder completely every hour, after taking a little of urine in to the container

9.  Refrain from eating (including betel leaf), drinking or smoking during the test. Smoking stimulates glucose by nicotine in cigarette.

 

LIPID PROFILE

 

10.  Test is done after 12hours of fasting. Refrain from smoking and taking betel nuts (areca nuts) during fasting as it can stimulate lipid.

11.  Come to the laboratory  05  minutes before completion of 12 hours of fasting for the collection of blood

12.  During fasting, water can be taken

 

*If the fasting time exceeds 13 hours, the fasting shall have to be repeated

 

 

COLLECTION OF 24 HOUR URINE SPECIMEN

1. 5L container with a preservative will be given to the patient by the laboratory. The preservative used is an acid, therefore be carful while handling the container.

2. Day 1 collection:

o               Patient rises in the morning and discards the first morning urine specimen. Then all urine passed is collected in the container till 24 hours.

o               Keep the container in a cool place

3. Day 2 collection:

o               Early morning: The first morning sample (at the 24th hour) is added to the collection container.

4.      Bring the 24 hour urine sample to the laboratory as soon as possible (within 1 hour)

8. Come to the laboratory before 1 hour with the 24hours urine sample for the collection of the blood sample

 

URINE FOR AFB

9. Urine sample has to be taken for 3 consecutive days

10.                Collect completely voided early morning first urine sample every day to the container given by the laboratory.

11.                Bring the slip given by the laboratory when handing over the sample 

 

COLLECTION OF MID STREAM URINE SPECIMEN FOR CULTURE (C/S)

1. This should be preferably done in the morning i.e., the first sample of the day but if your doctor permits specimen can be collected any time of the day.

2. Thoroughly clean the genital area with soap and water. Dry thoroughly.

3. For females, hold the labia apart while voiding urine. Initiate urination into the toilet, and then bring the container into the stream of urine to collect the middle portion of stream without stopping the flow of urine. Discard the last part of the urine.

4. Deliver the specimen as soon as (within 1 hour) collected.

 

COLLECTION OF MID STREAM URINE SPECIMEN FOR R/E

1. This sample can be taken any time of the day.

2. Initiate urination into the toilet, and then bring the container into the stream of urine to collect the middle portion of stream without stopping the flow of urine. Discard the last part of the urine.

3. Tighten the cap and deliver the specimen to the laboratory as soon as it is collected.

4. This sample can be taken any time of the day.

COLLECTION OF FAECES SPECIMEN

1. Pass directly into clean, dry wide-mouthed container.

2. Transfer about 5mL into the container given from the laboratory.

3. Bring the specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

Note: Your doctor can advise a minimum of three stool samples for intestinal parasites or faecal occult blood.

 

STOOL FOR OCCULT BLOOD

1. Do not take vitamin C (ascorbic acid) for 5 days prior to occult blood testing.

2. Avoid taking food containing liver, meat or fish, which contains high haemoglobin and peroxidase-rich foods like turnips, horseradish, cauliflower, apples, oranges bananas, grapes 3days prior to stool sample collection.

3. Avoid taking drugs like iron supplements, aspirin, indomethacin for 3 days prior to sampling which can cause false positive reaction.

4. Pass directly into clean, dry wide-mouthed container.

5. Transfer about 5mL into the container given from the laboratory.

6. Bring the specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection

 

COLLECTION OF SPUTUM SPECIMEN

1. Rinse your mouth or gargle with water. Do not brush you teeth or wash your mouth with antiseptic before taking the sample.

2. Cough deeply to produce lower respiratory specimen [not post - nasal fluid or fluid in the mouth-saliva] and collect the sputum obtained to the sterile container provided by the laboratory.

3. Minimum quantity required is about 1mL.

4. Deliver the specimen to the Laboratory within 1 hour.

5. Your doctor can advise you to collect three early morning deep-coughed sputum samples over a period of three consecutive days for the diagnosis of respiratory tuberculosis.

 

Prostrate Specific Antigen

1. Fasting specimen is preferred.

2. The practice of sampling at least 3 days following digital rectal examination or needle biopsy is done.

 

COLLECTION OF SEMEN

1. Collection of semen should follow a period of sexual abstinence of 3 days.

2. The specimen may be collected by coitus interrupts or masturbation into the sterile, wide-mouthed plastic container given by the laboratory. Collect the entire ejaculate. Do not use condom for semen collection.

3. It is best if the specimen is delivered to the laboratory as soon as it is collected (within 30 minutes) and inform the time of collection to the laboratory.

4. During transportation try to maintain the warmth (37°C).
